Citrus Horticulture Extension: Dr. Rhuanito "Johnny" Soranz Ferrarezi

Dr. Rhuanito “Johnny” Soranz Ferrarezi leads IRREC’s citrus horticulture research and extension in the world’s premier grapefruit production region.

Dr. Ferrarezi’s extension program involves methods to support citrus producers with their efforts to protect crops from citrus greening. His low-cost irrigation smart device is being implemented in the region’s citrus groves. His extension efforts are aimed at disease mitigation with the introduction of nutrition and better irrigation systems for growers to extend grove life, while the groves may be under HLB.

As a first step to fight citrus greening, he is working to create an integrated solution that will involve research scientists from multiple disciplines. His research is taking place in IRREC’s citrus experiment groves and greenhouses where he will demonstrate good practices with extension activities.

A prolific author, he published three catalogs for research projects; a book on nutritional guidelines for citrus seedlings production; and, wrote a book chapter about plant nutrition. He wrote and published 18 peer-reviewed journal articles in publications such as the Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science, HortScience, Journal of Plant Nutrition and HortTechnology.
