University of Florida/IFAS Indian River Research and Education Center Aquaculture Educational Opportunities

Dr. Cortney Ohs instructs both undergraduate and graduate courses. He is an Associate Professor, faculty member at the UF/IFAS Indian River Research and Education Center, and in the UF/IFAS School of Forest Resources and Conservation Program in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences based at the UF Gainesville campus.

• FAS 5015/4932 Aquaculture 1

  An introductory course designed to provide an overview of aquaculture of the field of aquaculture and the commomly cultured organisms in the United States. The course is designed for both undergraduate and graduate students who want a foundation in aquaculture principles to:

  1. Apply towards more advanced coursework in aquaculture, or other aquatic sciences, or
  2. To prepare for graduate research or a career in aquaculture.

  The course is entirely web-based, with narrated PowerPoint lectures followed by readings and other resources for each lecture topic.

• FAS 6165 Fish and Crustacean Nutrition

  An introductory course which covers nutrition of fish and crustaceans with an emphasis on nutrition and formulation of diets for aquaculture. The course is designed to acquaint students with basic principles of nutrition and feed formulation including digestive physiology, nutrients, feed formulation, and specific nutritional requirements for numerous aquatic organisms. Students are expected to participate in in-depth discussions of the various topics and are required to give oral presentations in PowerPoint format on assigned topics.
